Meet Me on Monday...

More Monday questions from Java at Never Growing Old...

1.  Did you watch the Superbowl?
What's the Superbowl? :O) Seriously, no, I'm English so it's not really a big thing here.  We have more than enough sport of our own on tv, which I always avoid. (Do you know, when I typed this question out my finger hit the wrong key and I wrote Superbowel at first! LOL!)

2.  What is the last book you read?
The Killing Place by Tess Gerritson.  I read a lot and usually have more than one book on the go, David thinks I'm mad, but I think it comes from my study of literature when I had to be reading one or more books at the same time as writing about others.

3.  What is your favourite kind of cake?
Gingerbread Cupcakes from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. They are seriously good.

4.  Do you snore?
Yes if I lie on my back - David has to poke me in the ribs to make me turn over.  My half-sister's snores are so loud she wakes herself up sometimes!

5.  Do you play an instrument?
Yes, at school Music and English were my best subjects. I play piano (studied it to grade 5 and would love to own one again if we ever had a big enough house), am trying to learn classical guitar, and was forced into playing bassoon in the school orchestra when I was studying O Level Music (I hated it! I wanted to play the oboe but they didn't have one spare at the time).  I wasn't dedicated enough when I was younger, but now I wish I had worked harder at music and could have made a living as a musician (I remember a Career's Teacher telling me it wasn't practical - what is it with those people?  Smash people's dreams and ambitions why don't you!).

I don't like to watch any sport, except sometime Tennis, and I have no clue (yet) what a superbowl is, lol ! I have to google !

Superbowl is really big in the States, isn't it? Someone on television described it as 'rugby with pads' which made me laugh.

LOL! We are all obviously happy in our Superbowl ignorance :O) Talking of rugby, I was standing next to two Leicester Tigers players in Starbucks once, I'm 5'9" but they towered over me! I was awestruck! Wouldn't like to see one of them charging at me down the field...

Since I'm a fan of the loser, I think "superbowel" is accurate. I wanted to play drums in school but Mom said it was unladylike. She made me play cello, and I was confused. This position is ladylike?

Barbara said...

Lol! I think the cello is wonderful but yes, a little awkward to hold! Commiserations on your team losing, even tho I know nothing about who was playing, what, or where! My husband tries to get me interested in cricket, at least u can read a book whilst there's a match on and still not miss anything :-))

Hello!
Coming to you from MMOM.The idea of watching UK football is bad enough I couldn't even begin with US football, we are wheel fans in our house so cars, bikes cycles etc.
If you have a few spare minutes please pop by say and Hi.

David is a BIG Formula One fan... I have been to Silverstone a few times with him - again, a book was about my person :O)

I just realised in my above reply I put 'u' instead of 'you'. My excuse is I posted it from my phone, and it's trickier to type on that!

With you on the sports allergy, and reading more than 1 book on the go. And you're musical? Wow! I'm tone deaf - even the cats try to break out of the room if I sing in the shower...

Well, it sounds like you all just needed to watch the REAL Super Bowl in order to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the game. (Barbara, you and your furkids may enjoy the halftime show in particular!)

Learning classical guitar is impressive! I envy people with musical talent. I had a similar experience as Rural View ~ when band was first offered in sixth grade, I wanted to play either drums or trumpet. My mother said, "Absolutely NOT." So I had to choose between flute or clarinet. I was a tomboy who thought flutes were too sissy, so I went with the clarinet, which I continued to play until I went to college and then spurned it ever-after. I sold it last summer at a yard sale to a teenage girl who's part of a very musical family, plays three instruments and wanted to teach herself the clarinet! I was happy to see it go home with her.

I can empathize with your hatred of the bassoon. I had to play the contra-basson, which looks like a giant piece of industrial plumbing, for one song our band played in high school that required that hideous instrument's two or three boring oompah notes.

With your musical abilities, does David ever mention that your snoring is melodious? :-)

My cats seem to like my singing even if no-one else does, they also like it when I recite poetry to them (Keats seems to be popular).
The flute is the one instrument I never could manage (it is so different to all the others) - I used to be able to get a few tunes out of the clarinet but I never really liked it. The bassoon is just awful isn't it? I remember having bars and bars of semibreves to play on one note, or bars and bars of rests when we all used to lose count of where we were! It does make you very good at reading bass clef which is very useful for the piano etc but apart from that... I can still remember how much I hated lugging the enormous case with me on the school bus... David does not appreciate my solo snoring, although he has no room to talk as sometimes he whimpers (possible when Pepper is sticking he claw into his chin).

Barbara said...

Meant to say - I would have watched it if I'd known there were puppies in it! LOL! :O)

Aaah, my dear, you should have stuck with the bassoon! Apparently, almost every orchestra everywhere finds the bassoonist's spot the hardest to fill. Possibly because no-one likes the bassoon anymore than you did, but still, just think - you COULD have become a professional musician!

Laloofah said...

Yeah, see - PUPPIES!!! That'll teach you to make dismissive and disparaging remarks about our Super Bowl! ;-)~

Barbara said...

I feel shame... :O)))

Barbara said...

Jay - that's exactly what my music teacher said about bassoon players - it didn't help though, I just wanted to set the damn thing on fire...
