For once I managed to get hold of two of the books on my wish list and read one of them in a few days - double hurrah! Take a bow Anthony Horowitz's The House of Silk, a wonderful homage to the Sherlock Holmes stories of Conan Doyle. All the ingredients are there - Holmes, Watson, fog, 221b Baker Street, street urchins, fog, dastardly villains, Victorian London, Homes's violin, and did I mention fog?
Horowitz captures the essence of the originals but adds 21st century slant to it - the main 'crime' in the book (which I can't mention as it's a major spoiler) is one that I'm sure Conan Doyle wouldn't have touched with a barge pole, but it works. A heck of a good read... I just wish he'd write some more.
Next on the list is The Snow Child...
... and whilst we're on the subject of Holmes,
don't you think David has a very Moriarty-ish expression on his face here?
If I'd done this in colour you could
have seen how spiffing my brown velvet coat (how
19th century can you get?) looks, but then you would
also have seen how badly my roots need doing...
Memo to self - wear hat...

I think you and David are the second best couple in the world. Number 1 of course is this U.S. Barbara and David, and we're #1 only because we're in our 70s and therefore older than you two.
Nice self portrait.
My favorite book this week was Dr. Seuss: The Cat Behind the Hat by Caroline W. Smith. Please come see what I'm reading now.
Barbara - I don't mind coming second to you and David, anyone else mind you and it would be a different story :O))
pussreboots - thanks :O)
I've heard good things about The House of Silk, but have decided that I should read the original stories before jumping in to an homage!
You're in for a treat Lindsey whichever way...
I am finally getting around to some of the Monday posts! It has been pretty crazy with the Banned Book Week festivities and hosting all the giveaways... fun but crazy. I wanted to tell you happy reading this week :)
It's been too long since I've read Doyle's work. I'll have to remedy that.
