The Thursday Challenge... and a plea

The Thursday Challenge this week is 'Friends...'.  As I obviously don't have any as I'm too busy being a cat-slave, here is a photo of Posky and Pepper, eyeing each other through the catnip.

Not so much friends as fellow drug-fiends actually...

This Thursday Challenge is a bit different to the ones I normally post, it's more of a plea than anything else on behalf of the cats of Ireland.  One of the blogs I follow is C'est la vie! wonderfully written by Em, who in her other life helps with the Cork Animal Rescue and fosters kittens.  Via her blog I discovered a petition to help get a better deal for the cats in Ireland where they are often treated as vermin and suffer the most appalling neglect and cruelty.  If you want to do something to help then PLEASE sign the petition to help get funds   made available for a trap/neuter programme and to get the legislation there changed, giving cats the chance of a better life.  This link shows a pic of Lorcan, a kitten with a severe eye infection but who was one of the lucky ones - it's not easy to look at but please don't just turn away.

Come on people, it only takes a few seconds to sign the petition, they currently have 719 names on the petition and need 1000, ask friends, family, fellow bloggers, ANYONE, let's make this happen for the sake of the cats.

Charlie says...
'Sign it!
You know it makes sense...'

  2. LOL! Check out Pepper giving Posky THE look. I won't wanna mess with her. :)

I wonder when people will realise that TNR (trap/neuter/release) is the only way to tackle the stray situation humanely. No animal asked to be a stray. Just like no human asked to be homeless. Be kind.

  3. Your photo is just precious! I love how Posky's face is buried in the catnip, eyes closed and totally blissed out, while Pepper is getting her fix while still maintaining a watchful eye on Posky to make sure he doesn't get more than his fair share of catnip sniffin's! :-)

That picture of Lorcan, on the other hand, is heart-wrenching. That poor baby! I'm glad he had as happy an outcome as possible, but the suffering he and so many others experience is so unnecessary and horrible. Thank you for bringing the petition to our attention (my signature ended up right above David's!), I'd missed it despite my daily visits to Care2 and was more than glad to sign it (didn't even need the nudge from Charlie!). I really liked what Whisppy wrote, the last three lines are so eloquent and so true!

Thank you, Barbara, for being such a good friend to our fellow animals, and such a fun friend to me! :-)

  4. Thanks for giving us the chance to sign the petition. I hope it will change things. As for my situation, since no shelter is accepting cats and I can't afford to spay/neuter 5 cats, I'm in a mess. AND Dave things Scaredy Cat has another litter in the barn. What to do?

  5. I have signed the petition. I'll write a short post and link to this one so that more people will see the petition. That poor kitten - what pain he must have suffered.

  6. I'm putty in Charlie's paws! If he says 'Sign it', I sign it! I've also posted it on my FaceBook page. I have lots of animal loving friends, so that should boost the numbers a bit, as they'll doubtless post it on their pages, too.

I see that the potted catnip is working wonders :)

  9. I'm visiting from jabblog. I have signed the petition and hope many others will too.

I volunteer my time to work with the TNR program in our community. The program does work but it takes money and time to be successful.

  10. @ Barbara II (from the US) ~ Have you checked with your local vets and/or shelters to see if you can get some low-cost spay/neutering done? A lot of vets will defray the cost under circumstances like these. You could also check with your local Humane Society or ASPCA.

Here are some other resources that might be able to help you help the kitties...

Castaway Critters ~ has a state by state list of TNR/rescue organizations and PA's is fairly extensive.

    Paws of PA

    Fairchild Foundation

You might also want to contact Alley Cat Allies for advice and information.

    Good luck!

  11. Laloofah: Thank you so much for your advice and the list of resources. I shall definitely look into them. So far we have only talked to our local animal shelter director, which is how we know no one is taking cats in the area, not even near Binghamton, NY. She offered to loan us cat carriers if we found someplace to take them but wasn't encouraging. Meanwhile, of course I've fallen head over heels for them. Again, thank you very much, and I rather like being Barbara II. :)

  12. Barbara II ~ You're most welcome! I really hope you're able to find something helpful among those resources, and that you'll keep us posted!

You're nowhere near NYC, are you? Because I found a great resource there, but figured it would be too far away. If you want that one, it's The NYC Feral Cat Initative. They conduct workshops for people who want to start TNR programs. Maybe they'd have some helpful advice for you or your shelter!

"Barbara II" does sound regal, doesn't it? :-)

I get many more views on my posts than comments, so please if you drop by, stop and say hello. Otherwise I'll start getting paranoid and neurotic, and worry that nobody likes me... sniff sniff...
