Oh, this is stunning! I love everything about it. Well done, you!
By the way, is that English Ivy? :-)
Whenever he'd hear non-Texans call a popular Country Western dance by its common name, The Texas Two-Step, my Texan husband used to reply in his languid drawl, "Around here, we just call it 'The Two-Step.'" So I reckon that around there, you just call it "ivy." :-)
Thanks all :O) Laloofah, LOL! Your husband sounds so droll, it could be poison ivy for all I know, my knowledge of things botanical is limited to say the least...
LOL - Well, since it's ivy that's growing in England, I'm going with English Ivy. ("This is a holdup, not a botany lesson!" ;-)
Yes, that's my husband, droll with a drawl. :-) We derive a lot of entertainment from the "around here, we just call it ___" joke (and accompanying attempts at appropriate accents). Diner in a Moscow restaurant asks for Russian dressing, waiter replies, "Around here, we just call it dressing." Customer walks into a store in Zurich, asks for a Swiss Army knife, clerk says, "Around here, we just call it an Army knife." You can see the hours of entertainment possible for two people on the side of a mountain during a long Wyoming winter, can't you? LOL Boston Baked Beans, German chocolate cake, Swedish meatballs (ack), Vienna Waltz, Irish whisky, French Toast, Swiss cheese, German engineering, Dutch uncle, California dreaming... :-)
Barbara, beautiful shot. I never fail to be impressed by your skills!
Laloofah, you sound like our kind of people! :) One of our favourites is paraphrasing the words of songs as if we're having a conversation. For example, on crossing a busy road, John (who's a bit of a mother hen!) often says, 'Take my hand!' I will then respond along the lines of 'Why, are you new around here?' (I'm a stranger) and he'll say something along the lines of 'Nice place you've got here, though' (in Paradise) and so on. We have many hours of amusement!
Penny ~ You and John sound like our kind of peeps too! :-) John and BW even have that Mother Hen thing in common. You sound like great fun and I love your game, which is far more clever than ours. I'm not sure if we could even play yours very well, since BW knows mainly older Country Western and Elvis lyrics, and I most assuredly do not. :-)
LOL! You two, what are you like?! I feel quite deprived... we do throw quotes from Monty Python, Black Adder and The West Wing into conversations at appropriate moments but that's about it...
I don't know about Penny, but those are three of our favorite shows! (We can quote from "The Office" as well, but only the American version). Funny, I already have Monty Python covered in my first comment on this post. :-)
Now that you mention it, BW and I do this, too - routinely toss quotes from favorite movies and older TV shows (we don't get television, so we only know shows that are available on DVD) into our conversations!
I don't know how I'd ever work this into a casual conversation, so I'll just go ahead and blurt out my all-time favorite quote from The West Wing, apropos of nothing:
CJ: There's an article I want you to read in The New Yorker. Josh: What's it about? CJ: Smallpox. Josh: The disease? CJ: No, the dessert topping Josh.
We watched that episode last night!! I have so many favourites from that show, like when Sam told Toby he'd accidentally slept with a call-girl and Toby said 'Accidentally? I don't understand. Did you trip over something?' or Josh saying 'I drink from the keg of glory Donna, bring me the finest bagels and muffins in all the land!' LOL! I can't tell you one of my fave lines from Black Adder as it will probably offend too many people!
I've never seen The West Wing, but the other two are big favourites, as is the English The Office. John and I know far more 40s songs than are good for us, so our paraphrasing game often comes from them. Also, as a family, we often quote, or adapt quotations, from our favourite films. The person who has spoken will then say, 'Source???' (copied from Anne Fadiman's Ex Libris) and the other(s) have to say where it comes from.
Barbara ~ you're kidding!! What were the chances? (100%, apparently, but still!) :-) I didn't even know you were watching The West Wing!
Oh yes, I love those two scenes! Toby is BW's favorite character on the show. I've often tried to figure out who routinely has the best lines, but I decided they all do.
This one definitely makes me chuckle too..
President Bartlett:They're going to come after me with vegan food and pitchforks. Charlie: That doesn't really sound like something people do.
(Don't be so sure about that, Charles. LOL)
Bartlett: Comin' at me with vegan food, Charlie, all night long.
:-)
We've only watched the Black Adder series once, and it was about a year ago. So while it had tons of great lines, I can't remember any well enough to quote them. Can you give us a hint about your favorite one?
Penny, I bow to the intellectual gravitas of some of your fun family games! I really love the one you just described here. Being in your family sounds like great fun, and would definitely keep those memory synapses firing on all cylinders! :-)
OK, here's a really daft one (not intellectual at all!) You know that the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson is often known as RLS? Well, we sometimes play a game with car registrations where, for example, 'NLG' will become 'Nobert Louis Gevenson' or 'RFN' will be 'Robert Fouis Nevenson'. It's totally daft and makes us laugh like drains! Not much intellectual gravitas there! :o)
You two have never had a dull moment together, I'll bet! Our car tags would require a new game since except for vanity plates, Wyoming's tags consist of just 4-5 numbers. *yawn* But I'm confident you and John would come up with an amusing contest nonetheless! :-)
"Laugh like drains" - I like that, don't think I've heard it before!
Listen to water gurgling down a drain and you'll know what I mean! :o) We do laugh a lot, I have to say! :o) I think a shared sense of humour is one of the most important things in a relationship, though not everyone I know agrees...
Laloofah - I love The West Wing, I bow down before the greatness of the writing! Can't count how many times I've watched it - and yes the vegan food thing did make me laugh! Toby is David's favourite character too :O) My fave Blackadder series is the Elizabethan one, and the line that dare not speak its name is when Blackadder says to his Aunt that it's cold, and she says , 'Nonsense, it's not cold, it's just God's way of telling us to burn more ....' (followers of a particular religion - more than that I will not say!). Penny - do like the sound of that RLS game - LOL!
Penny, I agree with you about a shared sense of humor being important. And I know what you mean about drains laughing. :-)
Barbara, we love the WW too and its brilliant writing and watch it about once a year. BW calls it, "Toby Time," as in, "Can we watch another episode of Toby Time tonight?" LOL
The Elizabethan era was our favorite Black Adder series too! We must watch it again. I just love Rowan Atkinson. And we just watched the actor who played Percy in Black Adder in "Notting Hill," last night (it's another in our own collection). :-)
I get many more views on my posts than comments, so please if you drop by, stop and say hello. Otherwise I'll start getting paranoid and neurotic, and worry that nobody likes me... sniff sniff...
Oh, this is stunning! I love everything about it. Well done, you!
